Nestle the nanny...
isn't happy. (Picture of us below.) Usually she makes border runs every three months to Bulgaria, stays a few days to visit family, then gets a new visa when she comes back to Turkey. A friend called her and said there's a new law, that she won't be able to return for 6 months...which means she'll lose her job. Her family is very poor, she sends almost all her money home. She's leaving for Bulgaria tomorrow and we all hope she can return on Monday! Maybe her friend is wrong, or maybe she can bribe a border guard....

Oh, that's sad. I hope for a positive resolution!
Poor Nestle...
Briget, I love reading your blog. And love the pictures. What a gorgeous country. As they say in France (I think), "Spend all your kisses."
hey Brige, love the blog. what fun! I've passed your address on to some friends of mine who are interested in lands outside the US so they can read your adventures too. What I really enjoy is your writing style. Very informative and yet conversational as though I were there with you. More details....what do expats talk about at expat parties??? Do you all bitch about your home countries or beat up on each other instead??? Give us the goods!!
Doug (as in Sarah and Doug)
Dianne...thanks!! People (men and women) do kiss on both cheeks in greeting, but I don't think that's what you meant :-))
Hey Doug!
What do expats talk about? The conversations are fairly predictable at first: Where are you from, how long have you been here, do you like it here?, what do you do? And then it's on to other things :-) As far as country-bashing, it seems the US is fair game for everyone :-) Including me but oddly I find myself getting defensive about it, sort of like, "I can bitch about my wife but YOU better not say anything bad about her!" :-)I haven't talked to an expat here who doesn't love this place, but they still bitch about Turkey and Istanbul, too.
Did Nestle make it back?
No, Nestle didn't come back :-(
It's a shame that Nestle can't phone or email Nihal about her situation.
Who takes over the duties that Nestle was responsible for while she is away?
Monte,
Nihal ownes her own business and so can take off a lot of time. The kids will be gone for 15 days to the grandparents in Ayvelik on Saturday (I will go with them only staying the first night at their house, for a week or so I will stay in a B&B and also go to Lesbos in Greece for a couple of days). Then I will take a bus back to Istanbul. Anyhow, since the kids will be gone for a couple of weeks she's not in a terrible rush to find someone.
Thanks, Briget, for you generous replies. :-)

WOW....how terrific! I'm drooling over your adventuous vacation.
